Rotorua – and the Cop who jumped out of the window
After realizing that we booked a mixed 10 bed dorm, we were ready for the worst. But as we arrived at the hostel we were just delighted. The room was huge, you didn’t even recognize that there were 10 human beings in it. We got rice and noodles for free and there was a special every night. During our stay it was the „Movie night“ with popcorn and hot chocolate and another night the owners cooked spaghetti bolognese (even a vegetarian one – wohoo) for all of us.
The next day our way led us to the „Kuirau Park“, the „Government Gardens“, the „Redwoods“ , to a Maori Village with the simple name „Tewhakarewarewatangaoteopetauaawahiao“ and last but not least we visited the „Rotorua Lake“

On our second day in Rotorua we rewarded ourselves with a day trip to Waimangu, a volcano valley, which is roughly 25 minutes out of town. To be able to walk the track I had to bandage my foot because the well known problem with my tendon on the inner ankle was back. Fortunately Lena doesn’t have any injuries so far.
It was really worth it, but have a look yourselves my lovely friends of mother nature, because pictures say more than a thousand words.
Back in the hostel we just wanted to eat something and go to bed early. Our plan was to enjoy the empty 10 bed dorm, because all of our other roommates were already gone. But suddenly things changed slightly ..
Because there was a weird smell in the room, we wanted to leave the window open for the night. I thought it would be a great idea to use our Lonely Planet books of New Zealand and Australia to keep them open. But obviously New Zealand was stronger than Australia and so Australia flew out of the window onto the small roof in front of our window. All our desperate attempts to rescue the book with the selfie stick and a broom failed. As we went back the next mischief was already waiting for us .. 20 Asians were waiting in front of the reception and within a second we knew that our dorm won’t be empty for the night. Beside the Asians there were also two Australians, who witnessed our little book incident and didn’t hesitate to help us. One of them was jumping out of the window heroically
to save our holy Lonely Planet. What a funny coincidence that the Australian one flew out of the window and not the New Zealand one.
Afterwards they teached us how to play poker and we got to know that our book saving heroes are policemen in Australia. Which wasn’t too bad because later in the night a homeless person tried to enter the hostel.
Exhausted by all those adventures we were more than happy to go into our beds. The rice cooker welcomed us at the door and would cook the rice during the night, so the Asians won’t starve the other day. The tender snoring of our roommates was helping us to fall in a deep and relaxing sleep. So we were fully rested to head off to Taupo the next day.
